Dry, gritty or watery eyes are common with age, with screen time, and in the dry indoor air of a heated or air-conditioned home. Relief usually comes from a few small things used together — moisture in the air, a warm compress, and drops that do not sting — rather than from any one product.
Before you choose dry-eye relief
- Preservative-free if it will be used often. Single-use vials or preservative-free bottles are the usual choice for drops used more than a few times a day; look for the words on the front of the box.
- Warm compress: check how it heats and how long it holds. Microwaveable masks are simple; USB-heated ones hold a steady temperature. Either should cover the eyes comfortably without pressure.
- Treat the room, too. A small humidifier by the bed, and keeping fans and car vents from blowing at the face, do as much as any product. If symptoms are sudden, painful, or affect vision, an eye doctor is the right first stop, not a shelf.
