MaxxHaul hitch-mount wheelchair and scooter carrier on the back of an SUV in a driveway
Our top pick: MaxxHaul 70275 Aluminum Hitch Mount Wheelchair/Mobility Carrier – 53.5″ x 29.75″ Cargo Bas — scene composed from the manufacturer’s product image.

Getting the chair to the destination is half the problem. A wheelchair carrier for the car — a hitch-mount carrier — is the cheapest way to solve it, if your vehicle and your strength are up to the ramp.

Before you buy a carrier

  • Check your hitch class first. Most wheelchair carriers need a Class III 2″ receiver; a Class I bike hitch will not carry a power chair.
  • Tongue weight is the real limit. The carrier weight plus the chair weight has to sit under your vehicle’s tongue rating — that number is in your owner’s manual.
  • A ramp is not a lift. If nobody in the household can push a loaded chair up an incline, you want a powered lift instead, not a cheaper carrier.
