If a smoke alarm, a doorbell or a morning alarm has to be heard to work, it does not work for everyone in the house. Alerts you can feel and see — a shaker under the pillow, a flashing light, a loud low-pitched tone — reach a person who sleeps deeply, wears hearing aids only in the daytime, or simply cannot hear a high beep from another room.
Before you choose an alert you can feel or see
- Decide what has to wake them. A bed shaker works through a mattress; a flashing light only works if it is bright and pointed at the bed. The best units combine sound, light and vibration so one of them gets through.
- Check the pitch, not just the volume. Many people lose the high tones first. A low-pitched or adjustable-tone alarm is often heard when a shrill one is not.
- Look at what it connects to. Some alert clocks only wake for the alarm; others take a signal from a doorbell, phone or smoke detector. Decide which alerts matter before you pick the box.
