Everything in this section
Hearing loss arrives so slowly that the TV volume, the missed doorbell and the “what?” at dinner all get blamed on something else first. Most of it is fixable, and the fixes that help most are not the ones sold hardest.
Why the hearing-aid section is so short
- Almost no over-the-counter hearing aid on Amazon clears our bar. We checked in August 2026: the no-name listings had only a handful of owner reviews, and even the branded ones fell short of our rating bar. What survived is a budget amplifier — a real help for mild loss, not a substitute for a fitted aid. We would rather show one honest card than ten hopeful ones.
- Start with a hearing test, not a purchase. An audiologist (or a free online test from a major hearing-aid maker) tells you whether OTC devices are even the right category for you. Moderate-to-severe loss is not an OTC job.
- The TV and the phone are separate problems from the room. Wireless TV headphones and an amplified phone solve the two hours a day that matter most, without anything in your ear the rest of the time.
- Alarms you feel beat alarms you hear. A bed-shaker alarm wakes a heavy or hard-of-hearing sleeper reliably; a louder buzzer mostly wakes the neighbours.
